As the tenure of the present local government chairmen approaches its end, those seeking a second term are facing significant challenges.
The state government has no plans to extend their tenure, leaving many in a state of uncertainty about their future.
This has caused considerable concern among those who fear that their performance over the past three years will not stand up to scrutiny in the upcoming elections.
Our investigation shows that out of the 13 council chairmen, only three (Lafia, Nasarawa, and Nasarawa Eggon) are currently in their second term. Meanwhile, rumors suggest that the Keana council chairman may not run for re-election.
The remaining nine chairmen, eager to retain their positions, are making various political maneuvers.
Political dynamics are heating up, as some chairmen previously attempted to extend their tenure to strengthen their campaign positions.
However, these efforts were unsuccessful. In some local governments, the elections will turn into power struggles between political godfathers, who hold significant influence in their regions.
Additionally, tensions are rising in places like Doma, where the council secretary is reportedly preparing to challenge his boss for the top position, setting the stage for a fierce political battle.
