Team Nasarawa is primed to showcase its prowess as the 8th edition of the National Youth Games, tagged "Asaba 2024," officially kicked off on September 9th at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Delta State.
With more than 5,000 athletes from across Nigeria's 36 states competing, Nasarawa State is setting its sights on making a significant impact with its well-prepared contingent.
The Director of Sports, Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, emphasized the team's readiness, noting the rigorous preparation the athletes underwent.
"Our athletes have put in extensive effort, and we are confident they will deliver strong performances across all events. We expect to bring home medals," he stated.
The Nasarawa team, consisting of 132 members—104 athletes supported by 33 coaches and officials—departed for Asaba on Tuesday.
They are set to compete in 15 sporting disciplines, including hockey, badminton, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, cycling, table tennis, and lawn tennis.
Nnamdi Osuji, coach of the boxing team, is particularly optimistic, asserting, "Our boxers have undergone intensive training, and I am confident they will excel. Both mentally and physically, they are ready to claim victory."
Similarly, hockey coach Zainab Sule expressed confidence in her team, pointing to the athletes' discipline and tactical awareness demonstrated during the zonal elimination in Plateau State.
"Hockey is a highly technical sport, but our players have honed their skills. I anticipate an impressive performance from them," she remarked.
Although the screening process saw a few athletes disqualified due to age discrepancies, the majority passed, and Team Nasarawa remains focused on delivering top-tier performances.
As the competition unfolds from September 12th through 19th, Team Nasarawa’s athletes are determined to secure a commendable medal count, with the state rallying behind them for success.
