In a significant move to boost education in Niger State, the House of Assembly has passed two landmark bills into law. The first bill repeals the Niger State College of Education Law, 2011, and re-enacts the Niger State College of Education Minna (Re-establishment) Law, 2024.
The second bill establishes the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa.
The passage of the College of Education bill came after the House Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, chaired by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, member representing Tafa Constituency, presented its report at the plenary.
The committee revealed that federal Colleges of Education across Nigeria are transitioning to offer both National Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.Ed) programs.
This dual mandate, recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is expected to improve teacher education and enhance education quality in the state. Notably, Niger State College of Education already offers degree programs in affiliation with ABU Zaria and UDU Sokoto, demonstrating its readiness to run degree programs independently.
The second bill focuses on transforming the Niger College of Agriculture into the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa.
The university will provide specialized training in agriculture and climate action, utilizing modern IT and scientific advancements to align with the National University Commission's (NUC) approved curriculum.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, praised the House members for their efforts in passing the bills, marking the 17th bill passed by the 10th Assembly in less than two years. He directed the Clerk to transmit the clean copies of the bills to the Executive Governor for assent.
