Prosecutors in Benin Republic have announced the prevention of a suspected coup attempt, set to unfold on Friday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Elonm Metonou, the special prosecutor at Benin’s court for financial crimes and terrorism, disclosed that Oswald Homeky, a former sports minister, was apprehended on Tuesday night.
Homeky was reportedly caught handing over six bags filled with cash to Djimon Tevoedjre, commander of the republican guard and head of security for President Patrice Talon.
The cash, totaling 1.5 billion West African CFA francs (approximately $2.5 million), was intended to fund the plot.
Authorities revealed that the suspects had opened a bank account in Côte d’Ivoire in the commander’s name earlier in August, and the funds were transported using Homeky’s vehicle, which had fake license plates.
Both individuals were arrested in Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin, following the discovery.
