Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has lauded the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway as an enduring legacy of the APC administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on the highway's alignment for sections in Sokoto (120 km) and Kebbi (258 km) states, Governor Idris praised President Tinubu for reviving the project, which had been dormant for nearly 50 years.
"President Tinubu deserves commendation for this achievement," stated Governor Idris. "We believe in his ability to deliver.
He has removed the dust off the file of the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway project, fulfilling the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians."
The event, held in Birnin Kebbi, was presided over by the Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi, who outlined that the 1000 km six-lane highway is scheduled to commence construction this August. Umahi emphasized Kebbi State's significant share of the project, with the initial phase covering three lanes on each side of the road.
The super highway, extending from Illela in Sokoto State to Badagry in Lagos State, is projected to enhance agriculture, electricity, trade routes, and tourism.
The project is part of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Legacy Infrastructural Projects, aiming for long-lasting concrete roads across the North.
Governor Idris further requested the Federal Government to revoke the non-performing contract for the Koko-Dabai road, allowing the Kebbi State Government to execute the project and seek reimbursement later.
Minister Umahi also addressed the slow progress of other road projects in Kebbi State, asserting that the government would no longer tolerate contractors abandoning projects after receiving payments.
Traditional rulers, represented by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama'ila Muhammadu Mera, pledged their support for the highway's construction.
Former Kebbi State Governors Sa'idu Dakingari and Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, along with other National Assembly members, expressed their commitment to supporting President Tinubu's infrastructural development initiatives.
