The Andoma of Doma, Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Ogah Onawo, has highlighted the unifying power of sports, emphasizing its potential to bring the country together.
The first-class traditional ruler of Doma Emirate in Nasarawa State made this statement while receiving a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Sports. The delegation visited the Doma Palace to present the nomination notification for the Best Performing Traditional Ruler in Nigeria (Sports) at the Nigerian Sports National Merit Awards, scheduled to be held in Abuja in September 2024.
Welcoming the delegation, which included the Special Assistant on Policy to the Honorable Minister of Sports Development, Mr. Kabiru Yusuf, the Technical Adviser to the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abimbola Adesonya, and Nigeria Olympic Committee Member, Mr. Vincent Michael, the Andoma expressed his gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the Doma community. He conveyed his surprise and honor at receiving such a national recognition, acknowledging that he never anticipated his efforts in sports would gain such acknowledgment.
He attributed their success to His Excellency, Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, recognizing the governor's dedication to sports development and his provision of state-of-the-art sports facilities that are set to meet national standards.
The Andoma thanked the delegation for their visit, prayed for their safe journey, and requested they extend his greetings to the Minister of Sports.
In his earlier remarks, the Honorable Minister of Sports Development, Mr. Kabiru Yusuf, reiterated the role of sports as a unifying force that fosters peace and unity, essential for the nation's development. He commended the Andoma for his significant contributions to the success of sports in Nigeria. The Minister announced the merit award recognizing the Andoma as the "Best Performing Traditional Ruler in Nigeria (Sports)" for his efforts in promoting sports and enhancing national unity.
His Royal Highness, the Andoma of Doma, Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Ogah Onawo, has been a steadfast supporter of sports through initiatives like the National Annual Andoma Peace and Unity Basketball Tournament, now in its 10th season. This tournament will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Andoma's reign later in 2024.
