The Federal Government has confirmed that a new minimum wage will take effect from May 1, 2024, despite ongoing negotiations by the Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage. This announcement was made by Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during the May Day celebration in Abuja on Wednesday.
The Minister reassured Nigerian workers that they will not suffer any losses due to the delay in finalizing the new minimum wage, emphasizing that consultations are underway to ensure the prompt release of the updated wage structure.
Labor unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have been advocating for a significant increase in the minimum wage to address the economic challenges faced by workers. They have proposed a new minimum wage of N615,000 to cope with rising living costs and economic realities in Nigeria.
President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event, acknowledged the crucial role of workers in Nigeria's development and expressed openness to receiving recommendations from the wage committee. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to national progress through ongoing reform initiatives.
