In a concerted effort to combat the perennial issue of flooding that has plagued households in the Wakwa/Gandu electorate ward, Hon. Aminu Mua'zu Maifata, the Chairman of Lafia Local Government and National President of ALGON (All Local Government of Nigeria), has embarked on an ambitious drainage project spanning 4.5 kilometers. This initiative has been met with commendation and relief from the community.
The village head of Gandu, Sidi Mohammed Baba, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the entire community, describing the project as unprecedented in its impact on the electorate ward. "This is the first of its kind," he remarked, highlighting the significance of Maifata's proactive approach in addressing longstanding issues faced by the residents.
Prior to the commencement of this project, residents like Mohammadu Baba recounted the challenges they faced during rainy seasons, with flooding causing considerable damage to property and disrupting daily life. However, with the ongoing drainage construction, there is hope for a significant reduction in such challenges.
The project, undertaken by a dedicated team led by contractor Aliyu Tafida, faced setbacks due to heavy rainfall, which damaged parts of the initial construction. Tafida explained the adjustments made to reinforce the drainage system against future weather challenges, ensuring its durability and effectiveness.
"Our approach now includes using concrete on one side of the drainage to manage the force of water flow, while the other side will be built using blocks," Tafida explained, emphasizing the technical considerations taken to optimize the project's functionality.
According to Tafida, the construction work is now between 45% to 60% complete, with a projected cost ranging between N200 million to N250 million to cover drainage installation and road improvements. Currently, 2.5 kilometers have been successfully completed, leaving approximately 2 kilometers to finalize the project.
The impact of this initiative extends beyond mere infrastructure development; it signifies a commitment to improving the quality of life for residents by mitigating the risks associated with flooding.
