Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has urged the 2,173 corps members deployed to the state for national service to make a lasting impact in their host communities.
Sule delivered the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2024 Batch 'A' Stream II orientation course at the Magaji Dan-Yamusa NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Keffi Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.
Represented by Mr. Ja'afaru Ango, Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Sule congratulated the corps members on successfully completing their academic pursuits, qualifying them for national service.
He then encouraged the corps members to recognize the weight of their responsibilities and leave a lasting impression on the lives of the people they will serve in their assigned communities.
"Your service transcends geographical boundaries. It acts as a bridge connecting diverse communities, fostering understanding and collaboration.
Therefore, both your significant and minor efforts will leave lasting impressions on the lives of those you serve. Seize this opportunity to learn, lead, and make your mark," he said.
He further urged them to pay attention to the contents of the three-week orientation course and the by-laws of the scheme, which serve as guiding principles throughout the service year and provide a framework for a successful and impactful service year.
Sule assured the youth corps members of the state government's commitment to their welfare, security, and general well-being.
The governor also praised the NYSC management, stakeholders, and collaborating agencies for their dedication to service and unwavering faith in the core objectives of the scheme.
"We will continue to provide the necessary support to enhance the scheme's capacity to fulfill its mandate. Moreover, I have taken note of your request for a 3,000-capacity multipurpose hall. I assure you that work on it will commence soon.
"While wishing you a successful, trouble-free, and rewarding orientation course, I encourage you to avoid vices and actively participate in the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development training to prepare you for economic development."
In his earlier remarks, Alhaji Abdullahi Jikamshi, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, praised the attitude of the NYSC members since the start of the orientation course, particularly their response to training.
"They have shown remarkable enthusiasm, resilience, and unity, creating an atmosphere conducive to the success of the orientation course," he said.
He then urged the 2,173 corps members to adhere to camp rules, respect authority, and actively participate in all activities.
"Seize the opportunities for personal and collective development that this orientation offers, and let the spirit of discipline and patriotism guide your actions.
"Your cooperation is vital for maintaining law and order and fostering harmony, essential for a successful orientation experience," he added.
Jikamshi expressed gratitude to the state governor for listening to the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board and the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development regarding the needs of the NYSC in the state.
"We look forward to your administration's consideration and intervention concerning the construction of the 3,000-capacity multipurpose hall and additional staff hostels," he said.
