The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) announced that the senior male basketball team, D'Tigers, will not participate in the upcoming FIBA Afrobasket Qualifiers in Tunisia.
The decision, attributed to insufficient funds, was revealed in a statement released by the NBBF.
The Ministry of Sports' failure to provide necessary funding for the qualifiers was cited as the reason for the team's unpreparedness.
Despite President Engr. Musa Kida personally bearing the financial burden for previous tournaments, including billions spent on national team participation, raising funds for the latest assignment has proven challenging.
Additionally, the ministry struggles to allocate adequate funds for various national engagements, such as the forthcoming All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana.
The NBBF appeals to basketball enthusiasts across Nigeria and the diaspora to empathize with the economic challenges facing the country.
Despite these setbacks, the NBBF reassures its commitment to fostering the growth of basketball in Nigeria.
