The wife of the Nasarawa State Governor, Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Suleiman, has affirmed readiness to support the National Human Rights Commission by providing land space to accommodate their offices in the state.
She made this declaration while receiving the State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and his team in her office in Lafia. This was part of the activities to mark the 16 Days of Gender-Based Violence Awareness in the society.
According to the Nasarawa State First Lady, Hajiya Silifat Sule, the National Human Rights Commission has been a giant in the fight against human rights violations in the country. Hence, her resolve to support its cause.
She reiterated the present administration’s commitment to supporting the organization to prevent innocent Nigerians from becoming victims of unwholesome acts.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, Nduka Ezenwogu, mentioned that they were at the First Lady's office to discuss strengthening the fight to end violence against women and girls in the society.
He explained that the 16 Days of Activism is adopted, among other things, to remind stakeholders to deepen the call for prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls in the country.
Also speaking, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Aisha Rufai Ibrahim, highlighted some achievements of the Nasarawa State Government in the fight against gender-based violence and other related social vices in the state.
She assured the National Human Rights Commission of her ministry’s support in some of its activities for progress and development to thrive.
In another development, the First Lady of Nasarawa State, Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Sule, assured the people of the state of her commitment to supporting her husband’s programs and policies to improve the living standards of the needy in the state.
The First Lady gave this assurance at the event to mark this year's World AIDS Day celebration organized by the Nasarawa State Agency for the Control of AIDS (NASACA).
Hajiya Silifat Sule emphasized that caring for the less privileged should be a priority for all stakeholders. She advised people living with HIV/AIDS to regularly visit health facilities for proper check-ups and medication.
She also used the opportunity to encourage individuals to visit testing centers not only for HIV/AIDS but also for other related diseases, as prevention is better than cure.
Earlier, the Executive Director of the Nasarawa State Agency for the Control of AIDS, NASACA, Dr. Ruth Bello, explained that over the past 35 years, there has been significant progress in addressing HIV and AIDS challenges. She expressed concern over the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS due to little or no enforcement of the anti-stigma law.
She appreciated the Nasarawa State Government for creating programs to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The theme for this year's World AIDS Day is "Community Leadership to End HIV and AIDS."
