Benue Police Nab Suspected Arms Supplier With 115 Live Ammunition

The Benue State Police Command has recorded a major operational breakthrough with the arrest of a suspected arms and ammunition supplier to criminal elements and the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition during a routine stop-and-search operation in Guma Local Government Area.
The operation was carried out by operatives of the Guma Police Division on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal arms and strengthen security across the state.
The police disclosed this in a statement signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command.
According to the Command, officers on stop-and-search duty intercepted two men riding on a motorcycle. On sighting the police, one of the suspects reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and escaped into a nearby bush.
The remaining suspect, identified as Joro Jakata, 20, from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was arrested.
A search conducted on him led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his possession.
The suspect is currently in police custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Makurdi, for further investigation.
Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice and determine the source, intended destination, and circumstances surrounding the movement of the ammunition.
Commending the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, reaffirmed the Command's commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition and dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and security of Benue State.

He assured the public that all credible information would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.
