The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticized the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, over comments made by his administration against former presidential candidate Peter Obi following Obi's renewed call for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Sunday by IPOB's spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group accused Governor Soludo of hypocrisy and political inconsistency, alleging that the governor had previously supported calls for Kanu's release but now appears to oppose similar demands when voiced by Peter Obi.
The group recalled that Governor Soludo visited Nnamdi Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja in May 2022 and publicly advocated for his release. IPOB also referenced statements attributed to the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, who reportedly stated in 2025 that the governor had been actively pursuing efforts aimed at securing Kanu's freedom.
According to IPOB, the Anambra State Government's criticism of Peter Obi's recent remarks contradicts the governor's earlier position on the matter and raises questions about the consistency of the administration's stance.
The separatist group further alleged that political considerations were responsible for the perceived shift in position and accused the governor of abandoning the interests of the South-East in pursuit of future political ambitions.
IPOB maintained that calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu transcend ethnic and political affiliations, noting that several prominent Nigerians from different regions have advocated for a resolution of the matter. The organization reiterated its demand for Kanu's immediate and unconditional release, describing it as a matter of justice and national reconciliation.
The statement also expressed support for Peter Obi and other individuals who have publicly called for Kanu's freedom, while urging the Federal Government to address the issue in the interest of peace and stability in the South-East.
Kanu, who is facing charges related to terrorism and other allegations brought by the Federal Government, remains in the custody of the DSS while legal proceedings continue.
