Alleged Corruption Scandal Rocks Nile University as Lawsuits, Integrity Questions Mount
Claims of Plagiarism, Grade Racketeering, Contractor Extortion Stir Public Concern

Nile University of Nigeria, a member of the Honoris United Universities, has come under intense public scrutiny following a series of serious allegations bordering on academic misconduct, financial impropriety, and abuse of institutional processes.
The allegations, largely circulated through whistleblower accounts, leaked documents, and anonymous testimonies, accuse some officials and lecturers within the institution of involvement in plagiarism, copyright theft, contractor extortion, and alleged “pay-for-grades” schemes.
At the center of the controversy is former Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Lateef Kareem, who insiders allege collaborated with a construction company identified as Raymond Black in demanding kickbacks from contractors handling projects within the university.
The claims suggest that certain payments were disguised as “project facilitation fees,” though no court ruling has established criminal liability against the accused individuals.
The controversy has also extended into the academic sphere, where some students allegedly accused lecturers of demanding large sums of money in exchange for favorable grades.
According to the accounts, some lecturers and students are currently involved in legal disputes before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria and the Federal High Court over issues linked to dismissals, employment matters, and academic misconduct claims.
Among those reportedly affected are Dr. Sunday Ayogu and Dr. Trust Nduka Obinna, whose dismissals have generated counterclaims and ongoing litigation.
Additional allegations claim that some lecturers supervised relatives or close family members as students, raising concerns over conflict of interest and examination integrity.
Further accusations involve alleged exploitation of students through academic publishing arrangements.
Some students reportedly claimed they were pressured to provide funds for journal publications, only for their research works to allegedly appear under the names of lecturers seeking career advancement and academic citations.
One of the most controversial aspects of the matter involves an ongoing legal dispute over alleged plagiarism and unauthorized publication of a student’s research work by senior academics.
Dr. Saaji George, identified in reports as a Head of Department, was alleged to have been linked to the matter, though the university has continued to defend its position in court while legal proceedings remain unresolved.
Critics have also questioned the effectiveness of oversight within the higher education sector, alleging that political connections and influence may have weakened accountability mechanisms.
However, no official findings have been released by the National Universities Commission regarding the allegations.
Despite the widespread claims, it is important to note that many of the accusations remain unproven in court, and several individuals named in the reports have either denied wrongdoing or are yet to publicly respond.
Legal proceedings connected to the allegations are still ongoing.
