IPOB Hails US Lawmakers’ Intervention, Renews Call for UN-Supervised Biafra Referendum
Group alleges worsening insecurity, insists self-determination remains “only path to peace”

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has commended a United States-based commentator, Mark Arnold, alongside members of the US Congress for what it described as a “bold and timely intervention” on the security situation in Nigeria.
In a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group praised the lawmakers for drawing international attention to alleged violence and insecurity affecting parts of the country.
IPOB further reiterated its longstanding position that Nigeria is facing deepening instability, alleging widespread attacks in several regions, including the Middle Belt and parts of the South.
The group also restated its support for its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that his earlier warnings about the country’s trajectory are being validated by current developments.
According to the statement, IPOB maintained that the only viable solution to Nigeria’s challenges is a peaceful and internationally supervised referendum that would allow people in the South-East to determine their political future.
“The demand for a referendum is non-negotiable and remains the only lawful and sustainable solution capable of restoring peace,” the statement noted.
The group warned against attempts to suppress its agitation through force, arguing that such actions could worsen tensions rather than resolve underlying grievances.
IPOB also called on its supporters and the international community to intensify advocacy efforts across global platforms, urging broader engagement on issues of self-determination and security.
The statement comes amid ongoing national conversations around security, unity, and political restructuring in Nigeria.
