Darkness for Sale: Why Lafia Must Break Free from AEDC Now

By Suleiman Abubakar Rimi Uku Lafia

What is happening in Lafia today is no longer a power supply problem it is a system many residents now see as organized exploitation.

For years, households have endured darkness, yet electricity bills continue to rise. Consumers are charged for power they do not receive, while repeated promises of improvement remain unfulfilled.

The question is no longer whether the system is failing, the reality is that it has already failed.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), entrusted with powering homes and businesses, now stands accused in the court of public opinion of delivering hardship instead of service.

The pattern is unmistakable: erratic supply, estimated billing, and little or no accountability.

How long will residents continue to pay for what they do not get?.

This editorial takes a firm position: enough is enough. The people of Lafia must begin a deliberate and collective withdrawal from this broken arrangement.

Boycotting or disconnecting from the grid may seem drastic, but continued dependence on an unreliable system is even more damaging.
There is a way out.

Solar energy is no longer a luxury it is a necessity. Across the world, nations and institutions are embracing renewable power for stability and independence.

The message is clear: those who wait endlessly for public power supply to improve may be waiting forever.

Nigeria’s electricity crisis has persisted for decades, defying reforms, policies, and political assurances.

Expecting sudden stability now is unrealistic. The responsibility is increasingly shifting to individuals and communities to secure their own energy future.

Lafia must rise to this reality.
The time has come to stop funding inefficiency and start investing in solutions that work. Solar power offers reliability, long-term savings, and freedom from a cycle of frustration.

The choice before residents is simple: remain trapped in darkness or take control of their power.

History will favor those who act.
