Analysis of the Electricity Situation in Lafia and the Role of NASERC

The recent inauguration of the Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NASERC) by Abdullahi Sule comes at a critical moment when electricity supply in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, has deteriorated significantly.
Investigations by our correspondent and feedback from residents indicate that many communities in Lafia are experiencing prolonged power outages, with electricity supply becoming increasingly irregular and unreliable.
In several areas, residents report going for days with little or no power supply, a situation that has forced households and businesses to rely heavily on alternative energy sources such as generators and solar systems. Many residents have described the situation as one of the worst power supply conditions in the country.
The establishment of NASERC is therefore widely seen as a strategic move by the state government to confront these challenges through a more localized and responsive regulatory framework.
With the ongoing decentralization of the electricity sector in Nigeria, states now have greater authority to regulate and develop their own electricity markets.
This provides an opportunity for Nasarawa State to design policies that address its peculiar power supply challenges.
Stakeholders expect the newly inaugurated commission to focus on several key priorities. First is the development of practical strategies to stabilize electricity distribution across Lafia and other parts of the state.

Observers also believe that one of the immediate expectations from NASERC is the restoration of stable electricity supply in Lafia and surrounding communities. Residents hope that the commission will work towards achieving a reliable 24-hour electricity supply, particularly in the state capital where commercial, administrative, and educational activities depend heavily on steady power.
