NBBF Dismisses Claims of Early Board Tenure End, Confirms Term Valid Until October 2026

Federation insists January tenure reports are false, unconstitutional, and misleading

By Our Sports Correspondent

The Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) has officially rejected claims that the tenure of its current Board ended in January, describing such assertions as false, unconstitutional, and deliberately misleading.
According to the Federation, the NBBF Constitution (2019) clearly stipulates that the President and Board members serve a four-year term starting from the date of lawful inauguration. The current Board was formally inaugurated on October 6, 2022, making that date the only legally recognized start of its tenure.
The Federation stressed that there is no provision in its Constitution supporting a January commencement or expiration of tenure, nor any clause allowing for backdating or recalculation of tenure after inauguration. The so-called “January tenure” is therefore a fabrication with no legal standing.
Pursuant to Article 8.1 of the NBBF Constitution, the four-year term of the current Board will end on October 6, 2026, and the next NBBF elections must be held on or before that date. Any attempt to declare a vacancy or impose an early election outside this constitutional timeline is considered null and void.
“The mandate of the current NBBF Board remains valid until October 6, 2026. Governance in Nigerian basketball cannot be dictated by misinformation or invented timelines,” the Federation declared.
