In a bid to revitalize the economy and enhance the quality of life for residents, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has presented the state's ambitious 2026 budget totaling ₦605.5 billion to the State Assembly in Makurdi.
The budget, titled "Budget of Rural Development, Livelihood Support and Sustained Growth," aims to strategically boost the state's economy and uplift the standard of living for its people.
Governor Alia emphasized the importance of inclusive growth, highlighting that economic progress should directly benefit ordinary households.
The budget allocates ₦281.1 billion for recurrent expenditure, primarily focusing on sustaining minimum wage payments and other essential costs.
Additionally, ₦342.4 billion is earmarked for capital expenditure, with a strong emphasis on improving rural infrastructure, including feeder roads, bridges, and connectivity to vital services.
Key priority areas in the budget include investments in education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, and social protection programs, with a significant portion allocated to rural development initiatives.
Governor Alia underscored that targeted investments in rural productivity and infrastructure are essential for driving economic growth and enhancing living conditions.
The Governor lauded the progress made in critical sectors during the previous fiscal year, despite economic challenges and security issues.
He acknowledged the steps taken to strengthen security coordination, improve infrastructure, reduce salary arrears, support agriculture, and invest in education, health, and youth empowerment programs.
Governor Alia affirmed his commitment to prudent fiscal management, revenue generation, and economic growth without imposing undue burdens on citizens.
He expressed optimism that with legislative cooperation, the 2026 budget will pave the way for sustained development, increased opportunities, and a brighter future for the people of Benue State.
