President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed the reasons behind his recent decision to relieve the country’s top military officers of their duties, describing the move as a strategic step to enhance national security and reinvigorate the Armed Forces.
In a statement on Friday, the President said the reshuffle was necessary to strengthen the command structure of the military and ensure greater efficiency in tackling the nation’s security challenges.
Tinubu commended the outgoing service chiefs for their dedication and years of service, while urging their successors to demonstrate professionalism, unity, and vigilance in defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
Those affected by the shake-up include General Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Defence Staff; Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, former Chief of Air Staff; and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, former Chief of Naval Staff.
The newly appointed officers are General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The decision, which comes amid reports of internal unrest and investigations into alleged coup plots within the military, has been described by the Presidency as a proactive measure to maintain stability and discipline within the ranks.
Sources revealed that 16 to 20 officers are currently being detained for alleged involvement in activities considered detrimental to the government’s stability.
The Defence Headquarters has since constituted a panel to investigate the matter, assuring Nigerians that measures are in place to prevent any breach of national security.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety of citizens and the consolidation of peace across all regions of the country.
