A fresh controversy is brewing in Lafia Local Government Area following the nomination of Hon. Ibrahim Khalid (popularly known as Yariman) as Supervisory Councillor representing Gayam Ward by the Lafia Local Government Chairman, Hon. Mohammed Haliru.
The decision, which has sparked reactions among residents of Gayam Ward, is raising questions over fairness and representation, as the nominee is said to be an indigene of Chiroma Ward.
According to a letter forwarded to the Lafia Local Government Legislative Council for confirmation, Hon. Khalid’s name appeared among those nominated by the council chairman to serve as supervisory councillors.
However, many stakeholders from Gayam Ward have expressed dissatisfaction, describing the move as inappropriate and contrary to established political norms.
The controversy deepened after a video surfaced on social media showing Hon. Khalid actively campaigning within Chiroma Ward, seeking support from his constituents ahead of the local government’s legislative composition.
The footage, now widely circulated, has fueled further debate over his sudden reassignment to represent Gayam Ward.
Community members and opinion leaders from Gayam Ward have called on the council chairman to review the nomination in the interest of justice, equity, and respect for local representation.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Hon. Haliru nor Hon. Khalid has publicly commented on the controversy, while the Lafia Legislative Council is yet to take a final position on the confirmation of the nominee.
