A deep-seated rift within the influential Akpabio family has taken a dramatic turn after Pat Akpabio, wife of Ibanga Akpabio, brother to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, released a viral video accusing the Senate President of complicity in alleged political killings during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
In the video, which surfaced on Facebook on October 11, Pat Akpabio launched a scathing attack, claiming that Mr. Akpabio “would never know peace” for the alleged acts committed while in power.
Her remarks have since stirred controversy, reigniting debates around past political violence in Akwa Ibom and drawing public attention to the internal divisions within one of the state’s most powerful political families.
From Political Allies to Rivals
Pat’s husband, Ibanga Akpabio, was once a close ally of the Senate President and played a significant role in his early political career, reportedly facilitating his entry into public service in 1999.
However, their relationship reportedly soured after the 2019 senatorial election defeat to Chris Ekpenyong, and further deteriorated during the 2023 general elections, when Ibanga supported Akpabio’s rival, Emmanuel Enoidem.
“This Is Your Quit Notice”
In her video, Pat Akpabio accused the Senate President of betrayal and ingratitude, vowing to challenge him politically in 2027.
“When you finish, go home. This is your quit notice. Nigerians don’t know who you are,” she said.
She further alleged that Akpabio once accused her husband of murder and theft following the 2019 polls, adding that despite her loyalty, she had never benefitted financially from him.
Pat also criticized the Senate President for neglecting his hometown, Ukana Ikot Ntuen, claiming the area has been without electricity for weeks despite his national influence.
Political Implications Loom
The development marks the most public fallout within the Akpabio family to date, with observers noting that the feud could have far-reaching political implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of the time of filing this report, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has not issued any official response to the allegations.
