The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate for continuing to bar Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from performing her legislative duties, describing the action as a “brazen assault on democracy” and a “dangerous slide towards fascism.”
In a statement on Wednesday, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the Senate’s defiance of a court ruling voiding the Kogi Central senator’s suspension amounts to a gross abuse of power and a direct attack on the will of her constituents.
Ajaero criticised the Senate’s claim that the matter is sub judice despite the expiration of the six-month suspension, calling it a “cynical ploy to silence dissent, crush opposition, and manipulate the judiciary as a tool of political persecution.”
The union warned that disenfranchising an entire senatorial district “steals the political representation for which the people pay taxes” and sends a dangerous signal that “votes can be invalidated by the whims of any tyrannical leadership.”
NLC accused the Senate leadership of testing strategies to weaken opposition ahead of the 2027 elections and vowed to mobilise workers and its moral authority to resist what it described as Nigeria’s “slide into autocracy.”
“The Nigerian people, united across ethnic and religious lines, will not stand idly by while you cannibalise our democracy,” Ajaero declared, stressing that “an attack on one senator today is an attack on the sovereignty of every Nigerian voter tomorrow.”
