The Federal Government has deactivated 13,597,057 social media accounts across TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for violating Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms and Internet Intermediaries.
The move was revealed in the 2024 Compliance Report jointly submitted by Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and other major service providers in line with regulations of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Confirming the development, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, said the report highlights a collective effort to ensure online safety, responsible engagement, and compliance with Nigerian laws.
“This submission marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment for Nigerian users,” Umar said.
She further noted that the Code requires big digital platforms to register locally, comply with Nigerian tax laws, and adopt stronger safety measures to curb harmful content.
While commending the compliance so far, Umar stressed that sustained collaboration among government, civil society, and industry players is needed to enhance user safety, digital literacy, and public trust in Nigeria’s online space.
