AT GAMBIA CPA CONFERENCE: NASARAWA SPEAKER CALLS FOR STRONGER COMMITMENT TO CHECKS AND BALANCES IN AFRICAN PARLIAMENTS

…Warns against endless talk without implementation

Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Dr. Danladi Jatau, has urged African parliaments to intensify their commitment to constitutional responsibilities, stressing that effective checks and balances are critical for deepening democracy and good governance on the continent.

Dr. Jatau made the call while delivering his presentation at the closing of the 54th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) held in the Republic of The Gambia.

The Speaker cautioned that repeated conferences without concrete implementation and follow-up actions will undermine the objectives of such gatherings.

“We are just talking; there is no supervision even within us in the African countries, and we will not get it right,” he stated.

He stressed that African lawmakers must go beyond rhetoric to strengthen oversight, supervision, and adherence to constitutional provisions, ensuring that governance processes are transparent and accountable.

The Nasarawa Speaker further pledged to step down the knowledge gained at the Gambia conference in his home state, with the aim of improving legislative practice, enhancing oversight functions, and promoting effective checks and balances.

“I am committed to ensuring that what we have learned here will benefit Nasarawa State towards achieving stronger democratic institutions,” he affirmed.
