The Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and Nigerian football icon, Peter Rufai, affectionately known by fans as Dodo Mayana.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former teammates, and the entire football community—both at home and abroad—during this difficult time.
Peter Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football, celebrated for his remarkable goalkeeping talent, leadership, and patriotic service to the national team. With 65 caps for the Super Eagles, he proudly represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and was instrumental in the country’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory in Tunisia.
Rufai’s illustrious club career saw him don the jerseys of prominent teams across Nigeria, Europe, and Africa, including Stationery Stores, Femo Scorpions, Dragons de l'Ouémé, Lokeren, Beveren, Go Ahead Eagles, Farense, Hércules, Deportivo La Coruña, and Gil Vicente. His presence in goal inspired confidence, and his contributions to every team he represented were invaluable.
Notably, Rufai holds a unique record as the only goalkeeper in Super Eagles history to score a goal in regulation time—a testament to his versatility and exceptional talent. He remains one of the longest-serving players in the history of the Nigerian national team.
Beyond the pitch, Peter Rufai was a mentor, a role model, and a symbol of dedication and excellence. His impact on Nigerian football transcended generations, influencing countless young goalkeepers and aspiring players who looked up to him.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life—a life dedicated to the advancement of football and the pride of a nation. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched and the legacy he leaves behind in the beautiful game.
