Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recently shocked Nigerians by announcing his resignation, citing a pressing medical situation affecting his family.
However, reports from the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) have cast doubt on his reasons, suggesting he was dismissed following a bitter power struggle with Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Ngelale’s official statement indicated that his resignation was due to personal health concerns, but insiders within the presidency revealed that his departure was linked to internal conflicts. Sources suggest Ngelale's exit followed a breakdown in relations with Onanuga, rooted in a dispute over seniority and overlapping roles within the administration. Ngelale was reportedly allowed to resign after pleading for a softer exit to avoid public embarrassment for both himself and the presidency.
Despite mediation efforts, tensions between Ngelale and Onanuga worsened, contributing to the eventual dismissal.
Ngelale's strong ties to key figures in the administration, such as Seyi Tinubu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, had initially bolstered his influence, but his strained relations with journalists and media personnel further alienated him from the inner circles of power.
Efforts to reach both Ngelale and Onanuga for comments have been unsuccessful.
