In a show of solidarity, former members of the National Assembly from Rivers State have called on all Nigerians to support Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the mandate given to him by the electorate, which has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. The former lawmakers urged that this support be given without fear, favor, or distraction.
The ex-NASS members, who served at various times, expressed their deep concern over the anxiety and hysteria caused by the recent political crisis in the state. They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Rivers State, a crucial economic hub in Nigeria, and rejected any attempts to undermine the progress and unity of the state.
Led by Senator John Azuta Mbata, the delegation of former National Assembly members made their stance clear during a press conference held as part of their solidarity visit to Governor Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Hon. Bernard Mikko highlighted the need to speak out against the current apprehension and uncertainty in Rivers State. He stressed that the unity, peace, and progress of the state are paramount and non-negotiable, irrespective of political affiliations.
"We reaffirm our absolute commitment to the rule of law, a cornerstone of democracy that ensures no one, including the government, is above the law. We uphold this fundamental principle, which safeguards justice, equality, and accountability for all," Mikko stated.
He also emphasized the importance of respecting the tenure of elected local government officials in accordance with the Constitution, condemning any attempts by politicians to extend their terms unlawfully. Additionally, he dismissed calls for a state of emergency, asserting confidence in the government's ability to address any arising challenges.
"We trust in the capacity of the Governor to maintain peace and stability in Rivers State. We reject all attempts to undermine the progress of Rivers State for personal gain and urge the people to reject and oppose such efforts," Mikko added.
The former National Assembly members commended Governor Fubara's efforts to promote peace and development and urged all Nigerians to support his initiatives. They reiterated their commitment to mobilizing resources and moral support for the Governor and his administration, warning detractors to cease their efforts to frustrate the government.
The delegation included more than 17 former Senators and House of Representatives members from the Third and Fourth Republics, as well as ex-officers of the National Assembly from the three Senatorial Districts and Federal Constituencies in the state.
