President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have been urged to include administrative and political autonomy to the financial autonomy already granted to the local government councils in the country.
The Niger State President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Comrade Idrees Abdulkareem Lafene who made the call while speaking with newsmen in his office in Minna noted that the political autonomy will allow the people, Particularly the grassroots to elect the council's chairmen of their choice.
He explained that the political autonomy should also allow the Independent electoral commission (INEC), to take over the conduct of the election into the local government from the state Electoral commissions
According to the state NULGE President who is also the Niger State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), taking over the conduct of local government elections by INEC will grant the local government councils across the country full autonomy as pronounced by the Apex Court.
He noted that the financial autonomy if granted along with the political and administrative autonomy will bring about speedy and even development to the local government councils emphasizing the need for the both autonomy to be granted the third tiers of government.
Comrade Abdulkareem Lafene, opined that granting the financial autonomy and administrative as well as political autonomy to the local government councils across the country, it will address the incessant Security challenges confronting some local communities.
While commending the Apex Court and president Bola Ahmed Tinubu for obtaining the landmark judgment as pronounced by the Supreme Court, the NULGE President stated that the local government councils across the country will now leave up to their Constitutional responsibility of bringing development closer to the people Particularly the grassroots.
