Abuja, Nigeria — The Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has called for international support to enhance the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and its contribution to the nation's economic growth. This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by Dr. Ali Nuhu, Managing Director/Chief Executive of the NFC, and senior officials of the corporation to the Ministry in Abuja.
Senator Bagudu emphasized the deliberate establishment of the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recognizing the creative industry's significant role in economic development. "Our major asset rather than liability is the creative industry and remains the biggest employer of labour," stated the Minister.
Bagudu urged the NFC to create opportunities for youth engagement in the industry and advised seeking collaboration with international bodies such as KOICA of South Korea, Japan, and the French Embassy to advance Nigeria's creative sector.
The Minister commended Dr. Nuhu, describing him as a disruptor brought into government to convey messages of renewed hope and resilience through creative means.
During the visit, Dr. Nuhu highlighted the need for increased budgetary allocation to the NFC to support its mandates, including maintaining liaison offices, developing the NFC permanent site, capacity building, and recruiting new staff.
Mrs. Elizabeth Egharevba, Director of Economic Growth, welcomed the attendees, noting the entertainment industry's positive impact on economic growth and expressing confidence in the Minister's ability to achieve further success.
The NFC, under the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, aims to foster a thriving film industry and cinema culture in Nigeria. Dr. Nuhu was appointed as the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the NFC by President Tinubu in January 2024.
