In a bold move to combat deforestation, Chairman Abdullahi Aliyu Tashas of Toto Local Government Council has imposed a ban on both the production and transportation of charcoal within the region. The decision aims to preserve economic trees and curb environmental degradation.
The implementation committee, headed by Deputy Chairman Abubakar Haruna OKpanaki, alongside key council members and security personnel, has been formed to ensure strict adherence to the ban. Their immediate tasks include halting charcoal production entirely, apprehending individuals involved in transporting charcoal, and preventing any disturbance to the forest reserve areas within the council.
Hon. Tashas emphasized the urgency of these measures and urged the community's support and compliance to safeguard the region's economic viability and promote sustainable food production.
A statement from the Toto Local Government Council Secretariat, signed by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Chairman on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Idris Toto, said an implementation committee has been constituted to ensure compliance.
Also included in the committee as members are the Divisional Police Officer, Toto Police Division (DPO), OC Military Super Camp, OC Whilst Stroke Ugya OC Civil Defense Toto Division and Commander Vigilante Group of Nigeria VGN.
According to the SSA Media and Publicity, the Chairman Hon. Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu Tashas, spelt out terms of Reference to guide the committee in the discharge of its duties which include
1. To stop completely production of Charcoal in Toto LGC
2.To arrest anybody seen transporting Charcoal in Toto LGC
3. To arrest anybody seen tempering with the trees at the forest reserve areas of the Local Government Area.
4. Their work is with immediate effect.
The statement further urged the people of Toto Local Government area to give their maximum cooperation to the committee and comply with the law to save the area from being devasted economically as well as protect and encourage food production.
