NASARAWA 2027: MASS DEFECTIONS LOOM AS PARTY DISCONTENT DEEPENS ACROSS THREE SENATORIAL DISTRICTS

Political analysts predict wave of defections as aggrieved members accuse party leaders of betrayal, exclusion from campaign structures

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, political parties in Nasarawa State may be heading for a wave of defections, with indications that supporters and key political stakeholders across the three senatorial districts are increasingly considering abandoning their respective parties for alternative platforms.

Findings from political observations and opinion samples gathered across Nasarawa North, Nasarawa West and Nasarawa South Senatorial Districts suggest growing dissatisfaction among party members, a development that could significantly reshape the state's political landscape ahead of the elections.

The anticipated mass exodus, according to emerging findings, is largely driven by unresolved grievances, internal divisions and what many party loyalists perceive as a failure of party leadership to recognise and reward their commitment.

Many of the aggrieved stakeholders reportedly played significant roles in building, managing and sustaining their respective political parties, particularly during previous political campaigns and mobilisation exercises.

However, they now feel betrayed, neglected and sidelined by the same political structures they helped establish.

A major source of the growing discontent is said to be the recent constitution of campaign councils and campaign management structures by political parties across the state.

Investigations suggest that several longstanding party members and loyalists were allegedly excluded from the campaign lists, while individuals perceived as newcomers, non-party members or political outsiders were accommodated in strategic positions.

This development has reportedly generated resentment among grassroots mobilisers, party executives and influential political actors who believe that their sacrifices and contributions have not been adequately recognised.

While defections are a regular feature of Nigerian politics, the scale and timing of any possible movement in Nasarawa could have significant implications for the 2027 governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.

Ultimately, the ability of party leaders to reconcile aggrieved members, restore confidence and ensure inclusive participation may determine whether they retain their political structures or lose valuable supporters to rival parties.

The emerging political question is no longer simply which party has the strongest campaign machinery, but which party can successfully manage its internal grievances before the electorate goes to the polls.
