In continuation of her statewide visit to Correctional Custodies across the state,the Chief Judge of Niger State,Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik,has granted pardon to nine convicts from the three correctional centres visited so far
A total of 255 detention warrants were reviewed at the three correctional centres of Bida and two of the correctional centres in Minna visited by the Chief Judge
Out of which 106 cases were attended in Minna old Medium security correctional Custody and 10 were summarily tried at the custodial Centre on the of order the Chief.
Additionally, three inmates, Sanusi Bako, Mohammed Sani and Abdulsalam Aliyu were discharged by the Chief Judge,
The inmates that received the blessing of the Chief Judge are those that were serving their jail terms having been convicted for various offences and they became remorseful while in jail.
The Chief Judge also ordered the summary trial of other inmates on awaiting trials with minor charges and she directed for their trials by the Magistrates on her entourage.
Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik equally reviewed the cases of those inmates that their case are still pending in courts without legal representation and she directed the head of the Legal Aid Council (LAC) in Niger State Barrister Bolanle Jibogun, to take over their case.
Similarly, the Chief Judge told the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), in the office of the Attorney General of Niger State Nuraini Baba Usman,Esq and the head of the Legal unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), ASP Edwin Ochayi to collaborate among themselves to expedite action in ensuring the speedy trial of the inmates.
However,those inmates with capital offences of culpable homicide,kidnapping, rape,armed robbery and other heinous charges that hearing into their cases is already ongoing in courts were not lucky as she directed that they should continue with their case.
The Chief Judge then warned the released inmates to guide against any act that would bring them back to the correctional Custody.
