The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Honourable Bliss Alabi Oshionogue, has been removed from office following an impeachment carried out by members of the local legislative council.

The impeachment, which took place on Thursday, was reportedly endorsed by seven councillors, who signed the impeachment notice that culminated in the chairman’s ouster.

Findings revealed that the development followed the collapse of reconciliation efforts initiated by the Edo State House of Assembly.

The state lawmakers had earlier planned a peace meeting involving the embattled chairman and the aggrieved councillors, but the meeting failed to hold, further worsening the political crisis within the council.

Although the specific allegations against Hon. Oshionogue were not officially disclosed at the time of filing this report, sources within the local government hinted that the dispute had been festering for some time, marked by rising tensions between the executive and legislative arms of the council.

The impeachment has heightened political attention on Akoko-Edo Local Government, with expectations that state authorities and other stakeholders may intervene to restore stability and ensure uninterrupted governance at the grassroots level.

Further developments are anticipated as the situation unfolds.
