Defections Reshape Nigeria’s Political Landscape Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has suffered a major setback as five state governors exited the party within the last 12 months, marking one of the most dramatic political shifts in recent years.
The governors who left the PDP include:
Sheriff Oborevwori – Delta State
Umo Eno – Akwa Ibom State
Peter Mbah – Enugu State
Douye Diri – Bayelsa State
Ademola Adeleke – Osun State
Their departures have drastically reduced the number of PDP-controlled states and weakened the party’s influence going into the 2027 general elections.
According to political analysts, the wave of defections reflects the deepening internal crises, unresolved leadership disputes, and shifting alliances within Nigeria’s evolving political blocs.
The situation has also boosted the profile of rival parties, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), which continues to attract high-profile political figures nationwide.
Adeleke’s Resignation Adds Fresh Tension
In a new twist, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has formally resigned from the PDP, less than 24 hours before the party’s scheduled governorship primary.
In a resignation letter dated November 4, 2025, but made public on Monday, Adeleke cited the persistent crisis within the party as his reason for leaving.
“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership with immediate effect,”
he stated, while expressing gratitude for the party’s support during his tenure as Senator and Governor.
Following Adeleke’s exit, Osun State PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi announced that the party’s scheduled primary election had been suspended due to factional disputes.
He noted that Adeleke was no longer interested in seeking the party’s nomination.
The PDP now faces intensified pressure to resolve its internal challenges and rebuild its political structure as defections continue to reshape Nigeria’s political map.
