The newly deployed Controller of Corrections in Nasarawa State, Mr. Charles Hanish Wayagoron, has paid a familiarization visit to the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Isaac Danladi, at his office in Lafia.
During the visit, Mr. Wayagoron commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his unwavering support for the justice sector and expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in Barr. Danladi, describing him as a pillar of legal reform and administration in the state.
“Given your position as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, we look forward to a crucial working relationship.
My predecessors have built a robust partnership with your office, and I am committed to consolidating on those gains,” Mr. Wayagoron said.
He also raised concerns over the high number of inmates awaiting trial in correctional facilities across the state and called for swift actions from the Ministry of Justice and other stakeholders.
“We hope to work closely with the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) to fast-track decision-making processes on pending cases and ease congestion in our correctional centres,” he added.
Responding, Barr. Isaac Danladi welcomed the new Controller and assured him of the ministry's readiness to sustain and deepen the existing collaboration with the Nigeria Correctional Service in the interest of justice delivery.
He apologized for a slight delay in the scheduled meeting due to a critical strategy session with directors and legal officers of the Ministry, focused on improving the justice system in the state.
“Your visit is highly appreciated, and your warm words about my office and His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Sule, are not taken for granted,” the Attorney General stated.
“We recognize the challenges, particularly the rising number of awaiting trial cases. Most delays are due to the late arrival of case files from investigative bodies like the police. We are working on outreach programmes to address this.”
Barr. Danladi emphasized the State Government’s commitment to justice sector reforms, including enhancing the synergy between law enforcement, corrections, and prosecution departments.
He further congratulated the new Controller on his appointment and described his posting as both significant and timely, adding that the Ministry would continue to support initiatives aimed at decongesting correctional facilities and strengthening the rule of law in Nasarawa State.
