The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Nasarawa State, Barr. Isaac Danladi, has reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Justice to strengthening legal reforms in the state during a works
hop on the review of the Model Penal Code Law. The event was held at the Taal Conference Hotel along Jos Road, Lafia.
Speaking at the event, Barr. Danladi emphasized the significance of reviewing not only the Model Penal Code but also the civil procedure rules, district court rules, and family court regulations.
He expressed optimism that the outcomes of the deliberations would produce laws that stand the test of time and reflect societal needs.
“We are here in the spirit of partnership and progress,” Danladi said. “I believe this forum will produce legal frameworks that are responsive, inclusive, and capable of improving justice delivery in Nasarawa State.”
Representing the State Chief Judge, Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu, Justice Simon Aboki applauded the initiative, describing it as a step in the right direction for the state’s justice system.
He highlighted the relevance of revisiting outdated laws and the importance of aligning legal frameworks with contemporary realities.
> “This review is not just timely, but vital,” Justice Aboki noted. “It offers a rare opportunity to challenge and reshape our legal procedures in line with modern-day expectations.”
Also delivering a goodwill message, Yahaya Yakubu Shafa stressed the importance of revising obsolete laws, especially those affecting children and vulnerable groups.
He called for a more inclusive justice system that addresses the dynamic realities of society.
> “We must ensure that every law reflects the current social, economic, and cultural landscape of our people,” Shafa stated.
“The legal system should cater to both men and women equally, and uphold the rights of every child in our communities.”
The workshop brought together legal experts, judicial officers, civil society actors, and representatives from relevant ministries and departments. Participants engaged in comprehensive sessions aimed at producing a revised and inclusive Model Penal Code for Nasarawa State.
