The Osun State Government has issued a caution to its residents following a cholera outbreak in Lagos State, resulting in five deaths and sixty hospitalizations. Cases have been reported in the Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe Local Government Areas. Additionally, Oyo State reported two suspected cholera cases originating from Lagos.
In response, Osun's Ministry of Health has activated the Public Health Rapid Response Team (PHRRT) and Public Health Emergency Management Committee (PHEMC) to enhance surveillance and protect citizens' health.
Although no cholera cases have been confirmed in Osun, the state has heightened surveillance and response efforts. Citizens traveling to and from Lagos and neighboring states for the festive season are urged to exercise caution and adhere to preventive measures.
Key initiatives include the deployment of the Cholera Technical Working Group, increased surveillance by local health officers, provision of medical supplies, and extensive public awareness campaigns. Collaborations with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Nigeria Red Cross Society, and local NGOs are bolstering these efforts.
Citizens are advised to ensure safe drinking water, maintain proper sanitation, and report any cholera symptoms to health facilities. For assistance, residents can contact emergency numbers provided by the state health authorities.
Hon. Jola Akintola, the Commissioner for Health, emphasized the importance of collective effort in preventing the spread of cholera and ensuring a safe festive period.
