FAMAKS British School, Kaduna has instituted a spelling bee competition in memory of it's late founder Alhaji Sagir Hamidu.
The inaugural edition had the host and five other schools competing for cash prizes in both the primary and secondary schools categories.
In his welcome address, the school's Director Mr Yakub Abubakar disclosed that the competition is one of the means through which they hope to keep the memory of their late founder.
"Late Alhaji Sagir Hamidu was a pillar of support for educational advancement especially for the less privileged. Our aim is to use this platform to create awareness amongst our younger ones towards strengthening their pursuit of knowledge", says Abubakar.
He added that the spelling bee competition is going to be an annual event and expressed the hope that subsequent editions shall have larger number of participants.
The schools that took part in the inaugural edition includes Beijing International School, Danbo International School, Legacy School, Turaki International School, Zamani College and the host FAMAKS British School.
Danbo International School won the primary school's category taking home a cash prize of ₦100,000. Turaki International School and Legacy School came second and third receiving ₦70,000 and ₦50,000 cash prizes respectively.
In the secondary school category, Legacy School came out tops taking home the cash prize of ₦200,000 while Danbo International School and the hosts FAMAKS British Schools took the second and third positions with ₦100,000 and ₦70,000 cash prizes respectively.
In his closing remarks, the Principal of the school, Mr Daniel Odobo expressed the gratitude of Management, Staff and Students of FAMAKS British School to the participating schools for honouring their invitation and thus joining them to eulogize their late founder.
