The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Niger State Council, played host to the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Nuhu Obed Nana, during its Congress held at the Press Centre in Minna, in a meeting that underscored the growing interface between government and the media.
Addressing journalists at the Congress, the Commissioner described the administration of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago as media-friendly, emphasizing its commitment to openness, accountability, and transparency under the New Niger Agenda.
He disclosed that Niger State is set to host a National Media Summit, a move aimed at positioning the state as a hub for media discourse and professional engagement in Nigeria. He further revealed plans by the Ministry to embark on a comprehensive media tour across all 25 local government areas, designed to showcase government projects and deepen public awareness of ongoing reforms.
While commending the role of the media in shaping public opinion, the Commissioner cautioned journalists against personal attacks, urging them instead to embrace constructive criticism that contributes meaningfully to governance and development.
He reiterated that the New Niger Agenda is anchored on accountability, transparency, and equitable development, adding that efforts are ongoing to transform the operations and service delivery of the Ministry of Information to meet modern communication standards.
In his response, the State Chairman of the NUJ, Abu Nmodu, assured the Commissioner of the union’s continued support for the administration, noting that journalists in the state remain committed to upholding the ethics and professionalism of the journalism practice.
Dr. Nmodu emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in fostering good governance and pledged that members of the union would continue to operate within the bounds of their professional code.
He also used the occasion to congratulate the Commissioner on his recent conferment with the traditional title of Dan-Masanin Wyiku (Barangoni) in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, describing the honour as well deserved.
The engagement highlighted a renewed commitment to collaboration between the government and the media, with both parties aligning on the need for professionalism, mutual respect, and constructive engagement in advancing the development of Niger State.
