Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has officially resigned from his position, ending a two-year tenure in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
In a resignation letter dated December 1, addressed to President Tinubu, Badaru cited health reasons for stepping down.
The President accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for the minister’s service, according to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The Presidency is expected to submit a nominee for his replacement to the Senate later this week.
Badaru, 63, previously served as Governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His departure comes at a sensitive period for the administration, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with details of the government’s security plan expected to be unveiled soon.
