The Bauchi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of prominent Islamic scholar and revered spiritual leader, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday November 27 ,2025 after a prolonged illness.
The revered cleric, a major figure in the Tijaniyya Sufi order in Nigeria, passed away at the age of 102 in Bauchi.
In a statement released by his Senior Media Aide, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad extended heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, students, followers, and the entire Muslim Ummah across Nigeria and the globe.
He paid tribute to the monumental contributions of the late Sheikh: “Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship, a man of deep faith, humility, and wisdom. His lifetime was devoted to the propagation of Islam, the teaching of the Holy Qur’an, and the moral and spiritual upliftment of humanity.”
The Governor highlighted the Sheikh’s educational legacy, noting that: “Through his numerous schools and learning centres, he nurtured thousands of students who went on to memorize the Qur’an and spread Islamic knowledge across the African continent.”
Muhammad praised the late scholar as a force for unity: “He was not only a custodian of religious knowledge but also a unifying voice for peace, tolerance, and understanding among Muslims and people of other faiths.”
The Governor concluded by offering solace and a pledge: “As we mourn this monumental loss, we take solace in the fact that Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi lived a life fully dedicated to the service of Allah, humanity, and knowledge. His legacy will continue to illuminate the path of generations to come.”
He assured that: “The Government of Bauchi State will continue to honor his memory by supporting the institutions and ideals he stood for, particularly in the areas of Islamic education, moral discipline, and community development
Reports have it that the renowned Islamic preacher and leader of Tijjaniyya sect Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, died on Wednesday night at the age of 98 at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.
A family source confirmed the death in a telephone conversation with Rimawaglobalnews online, stating that his corpse has been moved from the hospital to the family residence, where the funeral prayers will be held along Gombe road, tommorrow Friday.
He said, “You know that Sheikh has followers and children across the Islamic world, most of them have indicated interest to be in attendance at the funeral, so we have to give them time to be here.”
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was born on June 28, 1927 (1346 A.H., according to the Islamic Calendar), in Nafada, which was then under Bauchi State but is now under Gombe State, Nigeria.
Before his death, he was living in Kofar Gombe, Bauchi State, Nigeria. He started his Islamic education from his biological father, Alhaji Usman, where he became a Hafizul Qur-ān (Memoriser of the Glorious Qur-ān) before the age of 20.
He also studied with so many great Islamic scholars within and outside Nigeria. He said his greatest Islamic Scholar was Sheikh Ibrāhīm Inyass.
Immediately after some years, the great Islamic scholars he is learning the Glorious Qur-ān from them, confirmed him as a Professor of Qur-ānic memorisation and education.
Also, one International Islamic Organisation awarded him as one of the Greatest Mufassirun (translators of the Glorious Qur-ān) in the world. He started his Tafsīr in Bauchi State in the year 1950. In the year 1976, the Bauchi Radio Corporation started airing his Tafsīr on the radio.
Also, in 1980, he relocated his Tafsīr to Kaduna State, and in that same year, Radio Nigeria Kaduna started airing his tafsir series, especially during the Ramadan fasting period.
Part of his charitable work was the establishment over 200 housing units for students and followers, as well as numerous Islamic schools and agricultural projects.
As a prolific writer, he authored many books on Islamic literature and jurisprudence. In his role in Islamic affairs, he served as the Deputy Chair of the Fatwa Committee of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) in Nigeria.
His main legacy was that he was considered a significant figure in Nigeria’s Islamic intellectual history.
His wisdom and preaching have led many non-Muslims to convert to Islam. He has a large number of followers both within and outside Nigeria. He was believed to have 83 children and over 199 grandchildren.
Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi performed Hajj 55 times and Umrah (lesser Hajj) 205 times.
Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi is recognised for his wisdom in preaching, which has led countless individuals to embrace Islam, particularly during Ramadan. He advocated worshipping only Allah, seeking forgiveness, and expressing gratitude for divine blessings while sending salutations to Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).
Before his death on Thursday, November 27, 2025, he was a Deputy Chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.
