The Chairperson of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nasarawa State branch, Hajiya Halima Hudu Abubakar, has reiterated the commitment of the association to protecting the rights of women and children across the state. She made this known during a courtesy visit to the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Isaac Danladi, at his office in Lafia.
Speaking on behalf of the FIDA team, Hajiya Halima emphasized the vital role FIDA plays in delivering free legal services to vulnerable members of society, particularly indigent women and children facing various forms of abuse and injustice.
“Most of our members are female lawyers working with the Ministry of Justice, and we find it necessary to come together and offer voluntary legal aid to those who cannot afford it. Many of our interventions are done in collaboration with the Attorney Generals, who also serve as our patrons,” she explained.
She highlighted the financial challenges often encountered in handling complex and sensitive cases, such as rape of minors, which may require DNA testing—a service often beyond the financial capacity of the victims’ families.
“These cases are capital-intensive, yet crucial for justice. We rely on the Ministry’s resources and sometimes need extra support to ensure justice is served,” she added.
Hajiya Halima further noted that private legal practitioners rarely take up such cases due to the high costs involved, and called for continued synergy and institutional backing from the Ministry.
She also used the occasion to inform the Attorney General about FIDA’s annual national conference, often held in Abuja, for which members typically seek financial support for registration and logistics.
In his response, Barr. Isaac Danladi welcomed the FIDA delegation warmly, expressing appreciation for their impactful work.
“Let me commend you for your service delivery and for always being there for women and children. Your visit today is not only appreciated—it’s also inspiring. It shows your readiness to partner meaningfully for a just society,” he said.
The Attorney General assured them of the Ministry's commitment to supporting their cause and commended their responsiveness to recent human rights issues in the state.
“Justice for one is justice for all. And when it comes to women and children, we must act with speed and empathy.
Your intervention in recent cases, including the tragic murder of a lady by her partner, shows your proactive spirit,” he concluded.
The meeting ended with renewed hope for deeper cooperation between the Ministry and FIDA, as both parties reaffirmed their dedication to promoting justice, equity, and human dignity across Nasarawa State.
