Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has directed the House Committee on Lands as well as Committee on Public Complaints to invite the State Commissioner for Lands, Director General, Nasarawa Investment and Development Agency (NASIDA) and community leader of Ekye Development Area for questioning and investigation over alleged illegal selling of 9000 hectares of land in Ekye, Doma LGA.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau gave the directive after Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, member representing Doma South constituency raised the issue under matters of public interest during the House proceedings in Lafia today.
The Speaker said that it was uncalled for, for some people to forcefully acquire land in a community.
" It is unfortunate that we are seeing this type of things in this age.
" I believe the bill on Issuance of Land Consent before the House will address this, if finally passed into law.
" I will direct the House Committee on Lands and that of Public Complaints to invite the State Commissioner for Land, the man in charge of NASIDA, Ekye community leader and all those involved in this act for questioning and to report back your findings in the next two weeks.
The Speaker urged the committee to do thoroug investigation to ascertain the true position of the issue at hand.
Earlier, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, member representing Doma South constituency while raising the issue under matters of public interest said that some people want to forceful take over 9000 hectares of land in Ekye Development Area
" Mr Speaker and Hon. colleagues, three weeks ago, I was called by the youths and other people of Agbashi that some people brought white men to the community to buy 9000 hectares of land.
" The entire community resisted of giving their land to them, that where will they go to farm to feed their children and pay their children school fees.
"This is common heritage of our people and values, where will our people go if they take over their land, He said.
He called on his colleagues to support him to find out who are responsible for this negative act.
Also contributing , Hon. Solomon Akwashiki, Hon. Esson Mairiga, Hon. Sulaiman Yakubu Azara and Rt. Hon. Muhammad Oyanki, the Deputy Speaker frowned at such attitudes.
They said that the House should investigate the matter and ensure that justice is done on the matter to serve as deterrent to others.
In a related development, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has moved to reposition the State Fire Service for effective service delivery.
As a bill on Fire Service and Rescue Agency scales seconding reading at the floor of the House.
Tagged A Bill For A Law to Establish the Nasarawa State Fire and Rescue Service Agency to Provide For the Suppression of Fires, Rescue of Persons and Animals from Hazardous Situations and for Other Matters Connected Thereto.
Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House announced the passage of the bill into second reading during the House proceedings today in Lafia.
Speaker Jatau said that the bill, if passed into law would reposition fire service in the state.
The speaker, then committed the bill to the House Committee on Works and Transport to work on it and report back to the House on Oct. 21st, 2024.
Earlier, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara, the Majority Leader of the House while reading the substance of the bill said that it is aimed at reposition the agency and provide fire fighting and rescue services to the state.
Also contributing, Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, Hon. Jacob Ajegana Kudu, Hon. Barr. Esson Mairiga and Hon. Dr. Peter Ibrahim Akwe all supported the bill to scale second reading.
They said that the bill if passed and asented to would also address challenges of fire outbreak and other disasters in the state.
They said the bill if passed would also generate employment and would save lives and property in the state.
Hon Sulaiman Yakubu Azara, the Majority Leader of the House moved a motion for the bill to scale second reading.
Hon Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House seconded the motion.
The House unanimously passed the bill into second reading
Similarly, following the defection of Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar member representing Doma South constituency and the Deputy Minority Leader, the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau has announced Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, member representing Udege/ Loko constituecy as the New Deputy Minority Leader of the House.
The Speaker congratulated him and wished him well in his new position.
